How to insert, shortcut-type, edit, and preview block and inline LaTeX in this CMS editor, plus common operators and pitfalls.
Note: Delimiter examples below use the fullwidth「$」glyph for the halfwidth dollar sign you actually type in the editor (block math uses two, inline math uses a pair). Fullwidth form prevents this article from being mis-parsed as math on Markdown import.
1. Two kinds of formulas
Form
Editor type
Typical use
Markdown
Inline
math (inline)
In-sentence (a+b), variables, short expressions
$...$
2. How to insert in the editor
In the slash menu, math items live under Advanced:
Menu title
What it does
Common aliases
Block Equation
Insert a standalone math block
math / latex / formula / equation
Inline Equation
Insert inline math at the cursor
math / latex / formula / equation
2.1 Slash menu (best for beginners)
Type / in a paragraph
Type math, latex, or formula
Choose:
Block Equation → inserts a block and opens the source popup
Inline Equation → inserts an inline node and opens the source popup
Enter LaTeX (e.g. E = mc^2); blur or confirm to show the rendered preview
2.2 Shortcut input rules (faster once you are used to them)
Block math (type at the start of an empty paragraph, trailing space required):
Input
Result
$$ + space
Current block becomes an empty mathBlock
\[ + space
Same (LaTeX display habit)
Inline math (convert as you type in running text; triggers as soon as the closing delimiter is typed — no trailing space, unlike block math):
Input
Result
$...$
Inner content becomes an inline math node
\(...\)
Same (LaTeX inline habit)
Example: after typing $a+b$, the editor turns a+b into an inline math node (the delimiters themselves are removed).
2.3 Toolbar block type
With a block selected, the formatting toolbar block-type dropdown includes Equation, which can also switch the block to block math.
3. Editing and preview
The editor uses a source + preview model:
After insert: a source popup opens; the placeholder is often E = mc^2
Existing formula: click the formula to reopen source editing
Preview: valid LaTeX renders live; invalid input shows something like Invalid equation (click to edit)
Block: full-line / block display; inline: sits in the text line and follows line height
Tips
After inserting inline math, the editor leaves a trailing space so you can move the caret out and keep typing
To edit a formula, click the formula itself — do not “fake-edit” nearby plain text
For complex expressions, draft in a block formula first, then decide whether to convert to inline
4. Markdown conventions
This CMS import/export mapping:

Note: on export, block math may pass through a math code fence and then restore to $$. For everyday writing, just use $ / $$.
5. Common arithmetic (standard symbols)
In math typesetting, do not use keyboard*, /, or xas formal multiply/divide signs. Prefer KaTeX/LaTeX forms:

5.2 Signs and minus
Binary subtraction: a - b
Unary minus: -a or (-a)
Plus/minus: a \pm b → (\pm); a \mp b → (\mp)

7. Things to watch for
7.1 $ vs currency / literal dollar signs
Inline rules turn $...$ into math. Be careful with prices in prose:
Easy false positive: price is $12$ becomes a formula
Practical tip: write 12 USD, or avoid paired $
(The codebase notes the same BlockNote convention: currency false positives are accepted.)
7.2 Block triggers only at line start
$$ + space and \[ + space work only at the beginning of a paragraph. Mid-sentence input will not become a block formula.
7.3 Braces must be paired when needed
Wrong
Right
x^10 (often becomes (x^1 0))
x^{10}
\frac a b (occasionally ambiguous)
\frac{a}{b}
\sqrt x+1
7.4 Use real math symbols for × and ÷
Case
Not recommended
Recommended
Multiply
*, x, X
\times or \cdot
Divide
/
7.5 Empty and invalid formulas
Empty: no render, or a placeholder like “Add a LaTeX equation”
Syntax error: shows an invalid hint — click to edit, no need to delete the block
7.6 Inline vs block readability
\sum, \int, tall \frac inline can wreck line height → prefer block
Single variables / short forms like n+1 → inline reads more naturally
7.7 Backslashes and newlines
Commands start with \: \times, \frac
Block formulas can use newlines; use aligned and similar for alignment (advanced)
TEXT
Code is loading
KaTeX covers common macros, not full TeX; obscure package commands may fail.
7.8 Markdown import/export
Block: $$...$$ ↔ mathBlock
Inline: $...$ ↔ inline math
Do not fake formulas with ordinary code blocks (unless the language is the internal bridge fence math)
